 Workshop Details

TABLETS -Part 1(Android)

(Single session classes, all $10 each)

This workshop is for members with a tablet using the Android operating system. If you are a new user or have been using the tablet for some time but find some aspects/functions of the tablet puzzling this course will help you become familiar and comfortable with your tablet.  During the classes you are encouraged to ask questions and will be given individual help with your tablet. 

 TABLETS- Part 2 (Android) 

A follow-up to Part 1 – Covers more advance features;  download and install/uninstall an app, use the Android Browser to search on the Internet; add bookmarks: to use Notes, select text and cut, copy and paste. You will use the File Manager, the Settings app, email settings, mail accounts, add a mail signature.  Copying files between Tablet and PC, Backup and restore data will be demonstrated.

Backing Up Data

Don’t take the risk of a computer failure with the subsequent loss of all documents/pictures/videos, maybe years of work. With a regularly updated backup all those files can be replaced.  An up-to-date backup can also be used to transfer files to a new computer. The workshop covers backing up your files to a USB Pen Drive or External Hard Drive, using the copy and paste method. We will also look at the Windows 10 File History app, this can be set to automatically back up user files such as Word documents, Excel Spreadsheets, Photos, Email contacts and messages.  The Workshop does not cover backing up the operating system files or backing up programs which can be replaced using the original CD/DVD etc. 

Making a Christmas or Greetings Card

This Workshop shows students how to prepare a simple card using Microsoft Publisher 2010.  The Workshop takes you through the process of creating a Birthday card or Christmas card using the Publisher template and graphics supplied to students on a UB Flash Drive. At the end of the Workshop the completed card can be printed. The Workshop notes supplied cover the process followed so students can create and print their own cards at home.  

Files and Folders Refresher

This Workshop is for members who have completed the File Management courses but wish to refresh their skills. Maybe you did the file Management course some time ago and have forgotten some of the basics, which we all can do! The  Workshop covers: Opening and revisiting File Explorer: Create and save a document to a new folder; Locate and open the saved  document: Organize files: Separate & copy files

Changing views in File Explorer: Selecting the program that opens a file: Locate computer specifications.

Using Skype

This program uses your computer and the Internet to make telephone calls to anywhere in the world, including video calls.  Calls to other SKYPE users are free and calls to ordinary telephone connections cost about 3 cents per minute. Tablets, laptops and Desktops are covered.

Understanding (Android) Smartphone- Beginners 

This Workshop is aimed at members who have just purchased a Smartphone or have one but need help with the complex subject of Android Phones. We will guide you through the Orientation of the Smartphone, making & receiving calls, adding Contact No’s . Text Messaging: How to send and receive a message. Common Android Icons explained.

Understanding (Android) Smartphones - Intermediate

This Workshop is for members who have completed Part 1 and want to increase their knowledge, or anyone who feels confident in using the basics of their Smartphone. Our 2nd Class includes: Looking at the Phone Settings in more detail. Connecting to a Wi-Fi system whilst out and about; Using Mobile Data, Taking Photos and using the Gallery/Pictures App; Adding Photos to a text.

Booking a Flight on Line 

This Workshop will demonstrate how to book your flight on the internet, looking in detail at the Air New Zealand & Jetstar Sites and many others. During the two hour session discussion will cover how to get the best deal and what traps to look for.

Introduction to Excel  

Excel is a very versatile and useful program included in the Microsoft Office package. This workshop covers the basics of creating a spreadsheet and is a great way to get a grounding in the program. A simple spreadsheet and will be prepared so that the principles of these very useful routines can be learned. For those wishing to learn more about Excel a four week course is available.

Facebook Part 1

Facebook is a social media website to connect people and share experiences and photos etc., having a Facebook account can be a useful way to keep in touch with family and friends and become part of online life. During this Workshop you will set up an account; add your profile; explore Facebook Home page; brief look at privacy basics; log out of Facebook.

Facebook Part 2

An important Workshop for members who have attended the Facebook Part 1 Workshop or are currently Facebook users but want to learn more.  Covers how to add Photos to your page: how to set many of the important Privacy & Sharing settings: Timeline and Tagging Settings: The Activity log and Friend lists: Apps and games privacy: Blocking unwanted communication: Advertisements and your privacy. 

Using a Laptop

This Workshop will help members new to laptops become familiar with many aspects of the compact computer. Workshop covers; external connections, keyboard, touchpad, battery care, power settings, using the Sleep mode, connecting USB Flash drives and Antivirus programs. 

 

 

Photo Editing and Re-Sizing Basics (Irfanview)  

IrfanView is a free program ideal for viewing photos, resizing when they are too large to fit on screen, cropping and has some basic editing tools. It is compatible with all Microsoft Windows operating systems, a copy of the program is included in the workshop.

The workshop will cover; installation of the program, opening and saving an image, some enhancing, resizing and cropping an image.  Members attending the workshop do not need any previous photo editing experience, so come along and get started.

Trade Me

The Workshop covers the basics of using the Trade Me on-line auction web site. Includes setting up an account / searching for an item to buy / placing a bid on an item to purchase.  How to place an item on Trade Me including pictures and a brief look at paying for a purchase. The workshop will get you started and give you confidence to buy and sell on Trade Me.

Using a Digital Camera  

If you have a digital camera and would like to find out more about the various functions on the camera this Workshop will help.  Members bring their camera to the workshop, after a discussion on the general principles of using the digicam tutors will assist on an individual basis. Functions on different makes of digital cameras vary so the Workshop is limited to 4 members to ensure individual attention.

Moving Pictures from Your Phone, Tablet etc to your Laptop/PC. 

For this Workshop students bring their own Digital camera, Android phone or Tablet and learn how to download pictures from your camera onto the computer.  Covers creating and organizing Picture Folders on the computer; Connecting the Camera to the Computer; Using a USB Card Reader; Download Photos using File Explorer.

E-Mails Basics

This 2 hour Workshop will help you understand the basics of email. Email programs can be on your personal computer e.g. Windows Live Mail or Internet based Email e.g. Gmail. Includes basic processes of sending / receiving email messages; sending / receiving attachments; opening an attachment; sending and receiving messages when away from home.

Trade Me

The Workshop covers the basics of using the Trade Me on-line auction web site. The workshop will get you started and give you confidence to buy and sell on Trade Me.

Online Banking

The workshop is designed to help senior Kiwis feel more comfortable and confident when it comes to using Online Banking and provide an interactive ‘hands on’ experience of Online Banking. The workshops will cover a number of topics including; what is Online Banking, how to keep safe online, how to register and log-in, and how to complete transactions online.   

How to Download Videos from YouTube

A new single session workshop showing how to download videos viewed on YouTube and save to a folder on your computer. Once saved the video can then be viewed off line and also transferred to a tablet or smart phone for viewing at a later date, away from a Wi-Fi connection.

To download from YouTube a program is required, this is available free on the internet and if downloaded from the right site, is bug and advert free. The program is easy to use, practically one click and the video is recorded.
